What do you do, when your home has become too big because the kids moved to the mainland to study and your husband spends the working days in Lisbon
being a politician? Filomena Babo’s idea was this:
Let tourists come inside the ultra-modern architect’s house. She’s been renting the rooms for two years now, two times she enlarged the house and build additional apartments in the garden, each one offers space, is painted crème,
decorated with bright fabrics, almost everyone with a different floor plan, one being a loft.
The view from the ground level room’s terrace is like from the cabin of a luxury-liner
with own balcony: the infinite ocean, dark blue to the horizon.
The some hundred meters of farmland between the terrace and the sea don´t matter,
you only see it when you look down.
You never feel like in a Hotel, more like visiting friends.
You want to read the paper in Filomena’s living room, listen to some CD’s of her collection
on the stereo: no problem. Have a swim in the family’s pool or enjoy the ocean view from one of the chairs next to it. You're Welcome. There's only one enjoying the same
privileges as the guests: Chico, the only cat of Filomena’s collection of pets who is allowed to enter the house. Many more cats, three dogs, and the donkeys have to stay
outside.
By the way, the parrot, giving the name “papagaio verde” is only made of wood,
and on every room’s key chain.

Casa do Papagaio Verde is a guesthouse in the hills just a few minutes drive from Funchal and above and away from all the hotels and apartment houses that have been built these last years.
The house is a modern one with enormous windows (doors) instead of walls that overlook the sea from all the rooms. Some guestrooms are in the main building, opening on a garden full of tropical flowers and nice wicker chairs and tables. Others are on the swimming pool level just a flight of stairs below. The Pool has comportable sun beds. There is even a complete appartment (house) with two bedrooms in the garden.
The appartment and 3 studios with kitchen facilities are self catering. There are normal doubles too.
The owner is Filomena a lady in the real sense of the word. My husband and I stayed there over Christmas 2006 On arrival we were welcomed with a glass of Madeira wine of course in a living room decorated with taste and sense of a "warm" traditional Christmas with a tree touching the ceiling.
In the morning of the 25th we all got a gift, wrapped up beautifully, a kind of honeycake, deliscious, speciality of the island. You can have breafast in the mornig if you wish and other meals too if you ask in advance. Filomena has some small pets, but they behave very well and do not go into the rooms.
Staying at Casa do papagaio you need a car, but you will need it anyway if you want to visit the Island which Is a real paradise.
You have the sea, a nice clean interesting town (Funchal) the mountains and beautifull walks along the famous Levadas, the irrigation channels of the Island and last but not least restaurants with fantastic fresh fish. If you do not like fish , the grilled meat is a real treat. Do not stay at home during a cold winter or a hot summer go to Casa do Papagaio Verde and Madeira and enjoy the best of life.
